UNDERSTANDING BEMS (Building Energy Management Systems)

A two-part course held on line and face to face for people who need an understanding of BeMS but not a qualification, this could include Facility Managers, Controls Distributors, Mechanical or Electrical Consultants and people using BeMS or supporting the controls industry. It would additionally suite qualified Electrical and Mechanical Services Engineers inquisitive to furthering their career before embarking on a full BeMS training program.

Part one provides each student with a concise introduction to the component parts of a Building Energy Management System. This includes a commentary on some of the acronyms and vernacular used by controls engineers. Communicated in plain English, this is a good starting point for someone looking to understand what makes up a BeMS and is carried out on line.

Part two brings it all together, together we navigate a building following the ductwork to Fan Coil Units, Chilled Beams and VAV boxes looking at common HVAC applications in Air distribution. Then up the building riser to the Air Handling Unit and Cooling Towers, back down again to investigate Heating, Cooling and the Control Panel. Finishing off back in the Energy Managers office looking at Supervisor Software, Communications Protocol and Man Machine Interfaces. This gives a flow to the tutorial that reflects what is found on site.

We also understand how BEMS can save energy, improve the working environment for building occupants and create globally accessible data for distribution to Facility Managers and estate owners.

Finally, an appreciation of how BEMS are installed by controls electricians, networked and integrated by controls engineers and an overview of the route to market in the UK for those embarking on a sales career in BEMS.
